The landscapes and villages of Carles Sanjosé, architect and musician
The landscape surrounding la Bisbal d'Empordà, my home town, is fantastic. You can walk down any path leaving la Bisbal and you will find little orchards and vegetable gardens, gentle hills and patches of forest with hidden treasures, It's a small-sized landscape with a lot of history in it, where every little corner has a reason for existence and human presence is everywhere.
One of the places where I love to admire this landscape, sculpted by farmers and the seasons, is the Benedictine monastery of Sant Miquel de Cruïlles, a jewel of the Catalan Romanic period. It is half way between Cruïlles and Sant Sadurní de l'Heura and it is the initial point for many cyclists and motorcyclists who want to cross the Area of Natural Interest of les Gavarres. Did you know that the megaliths of les Gavarres were built at different moments of the Stone Age and that in Fitor, the largest concentration of prehistoric dolmens of el Baix Empordà has been found? Well then, If you want to discover all of its cultural heritage, you just have to follow the routes which can be found all over les Gavarres, that's my advice.
I also suggest you to visit the little villages of l'Empordanet. After visiting the walled town of Ullastret, a few kilometres away, you can find Peratallada, one of the most surprising medieval towns of Catalunya, according to a lot of guide books. You can continue your journey towards the spectacular Jaume I square in Monells, passing through the peaceful villages of Vulpellac and Cruïlles. Before the end of your route, discover the surprising corners of Corçà and Casavells.
